UK Girl Group Emerge As New iBand Contender
iPhone Savior —
It's not often that I get an email tip from a Creative Manager at Sony Music Entertainment UK pointing me to an unsigned group of girly girls playing iPhone instruments. This all girl band go by the name "The Mentalists", seen here performing a wicked cover of "Kids" by the wildly popular UK band MGMT using only the iPhone and iPod touch to dazzle a crowd. Their performance is far from musical perfection, but who cares, it's all about iPhone domination in the UK. Though "The Mentalists' are way more than just an iBand by design, it's ...
London's The Mentalists Cover MGMT on iPhones [IPhone Apps]
Gizmodo —
We've never heard of the Mentalists (because we're old), but this four-woman London band just covered MGMT's Kids using just iPhones. And it doesn't sound like shit! The foursome used the App Store's Ocarina, Retro Synth, miniSynth and DigiDrummer Lite to recreate the song. Again, surprisingly not horrible. [T3]

iPhone, iPod Touch Musicians Cover MGMT
Wired: Gadget Lab —
We've been big fans of musical instrument apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and the above video is a great example of how they can all come together to play some catchy jams. The apps used include Ocarina, Retro Synth, miniSynth and DigiDrummer Lite — all available through the App Store. I love that MGMT song, by the way.
Any iPhone musicians in San Francisco? We should band up! I could do guitar with iShred.

The Mentalists Rock Out With Their iPods Out!!!
Mac|Life all RSS Feed —
[image] The Mentalists are a group of über-hot, sinfully-sexy, rocker chicks who will seduce you all with their electro-rock pop-tart tunes and hot British accents. Seriously... who doesn't fantasize about being serenaded to by four lovely U.K ladies? We here at Mac|Life all do. [image] What has caught our attention even more, then their already cool videos and tunes, was a cover of MGMT's "Kids" The Mentalists did using only their iPhones/ iPod touches and apps they downloaded from the App Store. They used the Ocarina , Retro Synth , miniSynth , and DigiDrummer Lite . It's pretty much one of the most magical things we have seen in a long ...
UK band creates song using just iPhone apps
Newlaunches.com —
A local London band, the Mentalists, recently performed a live cover of MGMT’s “Kids”. While that’s not really news, the interesting part about the performance is that it was performed using only apps found on the Apple App Store. The applications used during the performance included Ocarina, Retro Synth, miniSynth, and DigiDrummer Lite and were performed on both iPhones and iPod Touches. A truly creative band when it comes to using the latest technology while being portable at the same time. [ T3 ...

And the interesting part is that the performance was performed using only the apps found in the Apple App Store, includes Ocarina, Retro Synth, miniSynth, and DigiDrummer Lite, with their iPhone and their iPod Touches. Looks like one of them is the WWE Champion, but wait… the “W” logo is upside down which I guese it means “M” for Mentalist. Video after the break. [via New Launches ...

Video: The Mentalists cover MGMT rather awkwardly on iPhones and iPod Touch
Boing Boing Gadgets —
Using Ocarina, Retro Synth, miniSynth, and DigiDrummer Lite, an all-girl UK band covers that one MGMT song about the family of trees. It sounds okay, but it seems like they're slogging through it just so they can provide the background music to a boutique opening or something.

Beautiful girls and beautiful iPhones make beautiful music together
Macenstein —
Beautiful girls and beautiful iPhones make beautiful music together I think we can all agree that the only thing sexier than girls who play instruments is girls who play iPhones. And since girls who play iPhones is simply a fetish I made up just now, you can imagine my surprise when faithful Macenstein reader Antonio sent us this clip of the UK girl group The Mentalists ...

Band plays track with just iPhones and iPod touches
Technically Incorrect —
You either like the MGMT track "Kids" or you don't.
The question is: will you like the Mentalists' version which is played not using instruments, but entirely on iPhones and iPod touches.
The all-girl band downloaded applications from iTunes and played as if they were deaf to tradition.
Among the downloads was the Ocarina app, which lets you mimic the sound of a flute. As well as RetroSynth and MiniSynth, which both help you believe you currently live with the Pet Shop Boys. The drums were performed courtesy of DigiDrummer Lite.
But enough about the technology. See whether you think, as ...

The most brilliant digital marketing strategies executed by the smartest digital teams quite often don’t come close to creating the viral boost that a little imagination, ingenuity and sense of humor can. Music Ally pointed us towards this piece of fun which features indie band The Mentalists using four iPhone apps -Ocarina, Retro Synth, miniSynth and DigiDrummer Lite - to produce a cover of MGMT’s “Kid’s”.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) —
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Odds and ends, Developer, iPhone, App Store I've been down on the fine folks at Smule in the past -- I've said that their app Ocarina seems kind of silly (even if people have created some pretty awesome stuff with it and other less annoying music apps). And about the only thing they could have done to make it up to me was to develop some sort of super massively multiplayer music app, some app in which you could play a tune and have it sent all around the world. So I guess I have to call off my pretend grudge against them once ...
iPhone artist playing Wembley stadium from handset
T3.com News —
Musician Gary Go is set to play a whole new kind of stadium gig. Instead of using real instruments for his guitar, drums, piano and horn sections, he’ll be using his iPhone and software downloaded from the iTunes store.
Go actually used his smartphone to record demos for his album. “At this point it's quite hard to think of something I don't use the phone for," he said. "For songwriters it's an amazing tool as I always have it with me. I used to phone myself and leave messages to remember ideas. Now I can record real tracks in the park - it's great."
This won’t actually be the first performance of its kind; ...

Tim Conneally's Concerto for Guitar and iPhone, Op. 2
Betanews —
By Tim Conneally, Betanews
The creative end of the music industry is drawing ever closer to a nexus: a point where composing, recording, distributing and publicizing music meets. You could be holding it in your pocket right now, and it's not the same point of convergence sold by the ounce that drove the industry in the past. It's the ubiquitous, lionized, and oh-so-lucrative iPhone. Recording tasks that were once executed by huge studios are being accomplished in smaller and smaller settings: the demo studio was supplanted by the home studio, which was in turn replaced by the even smaller PC/laptop studio. Indie pop band The 88 made the next step down ...
Best Ways to Produce Music on an iPhone
Wired: Epicenter —
Making music with telephones isn’t an entirely new concept; just witness Bedhead and Macha’s cover of Cher’s “Believe,” whose main chorus is played on a touchtone phone. However, the iPhone transcends novelty status when it comes to making music, due to the sensitivity of its controls and its versatility in the hands of enterprising app developers. A wide variety of solid options exist for creating entire songs with an iPhone.
These apps aren’t about to disrupt the market for full-fledged music production software, but they have opened the doors for a whole new slice of the ...
