iPhone Dev Team successfully boots Linux on iPhone
AppleInsider —
By Aidan Malley Published: 07:45 PM EST A milestone has been reached in iPhone firmware modification on Friday with the first alternative operating system for the hardware, Linux, now running on the device. The first build created by Dev Team is now running on iPhone, iPhone 3G, and the original iPod touch in what's considered a "draft" version. The software primarily includes the main Linux 2.6 kernel as well as rudimentary graphics, serial, and other functional drivers that are just enough to get a command line running when input is sent over the USB interface; the accelerometer, audio, networking and even the touchscreen have yet to receive any kind ...
Linux on iPhone is born...
9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence —
So, it was bound to happen at some time. Linux is now booting on the iPhone. It still has a long way to go in the "features" department but tinkerers will no doubt be interested in playing with the iPhone and its new capabilities. Don't expect a mainstream version any time soon...head to OpenMoko if that is your thing.

iPhone hackers achieve a milestone: Linux boot
The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) —
Filed under: OS, Open Source, iPhone, Jailbreak/pwnage Call it the Touchable Penguin. OK, the touchscreen drivers aren't there yet, but the simple, scrolling shell output of a Linux kernel running on the iPhone represents a big achievement for the iPhone Dev Team and dev lead 'planetbeing.' The build is far from complete -- no wireless networking, no sound, no writeable support for the NAND flash memory -- but it's still very cool, and the effort involved was substantial (the team had to reverse-engineer the iPhone's boot loader so they could write their own). ...
OpeniBoot - iPhone Linux
iTech News Net —
planetbeing, one of the iPhone Dev Team members, has ported the Linux OS to the iPhone and named OpeniBoot. The OpeniBoot allows users to choose between Linux OS and iPhone’s Mac OS. Currently the iPhone Linux is not a complete solution for end users as it doesn’t support wireless networking, touchscree, acelerometer…etc yet.

MAKE Magazine: hacks —
The iPhone dev team, hard at work as usual, announced a successful iPhone Linux port today. It's still at a very early stage, but the kernel boots on first and second generation iPhones and the first generation iPod touch. A framebuffer driver and a working Busybox installation point to an exciting open source future:
What we have:
- Framebuffer driver
- Serial driver
- Serial over USB driver
- Interrupts, MMU, clock, etc.
What we have in openiboot (but hasn't been ported yet):
- Read-only support for the NAND

Breaking News: Linux Ported to the iPhone
iPhone Hacks —
Planetbeing has mentioned in the announcement that this is currently a rough first draft of the port as drivers for touchscreen, sound, Wi-Fi/cell radio support are still missing. It appears that they also have plans to port Android to the iPhone and are looking for folks with prior experience in hacking/porting Android. You can checkout the video demonstration of Linux running on the iPhone below: You can download the Linux port here and follow these instructions to install it. Please proceed with caution as this is only for the technically inclined. It is also a rough first draft and in current form will make your iPhone unusable. Today's ...

Redefining “user unfriendliness”: Linux is ported to the iPhone… for some reason
Macenstein —
I’ve never been a fan of how user-friendly the iPhone’s OS is. Sure, it’s OK , but it’s always bothered me that I did not need a USB client, computer and keyboard hooked to it to display a text-navigated kernel, and instead I was forced to use that beautiful graphical interface and intuitive touch screen to navigate my visually stunning and well-designed apps and games. Well, luckily for me, my days of easily getting things done on the iPhone may be numbered, as Linux, the operating system that seems to exist solely for the purpose of seeing which devices that were not meant to run on can be forced to run it, can add another notch on its belt – the iPhone. The ...

Obsessable News Feed —
Some enterprising hackers have managed to get the iPhone to boot Linux. The iphone-dev team announced the achievement yesterday and launched a new blog dedicated to the launch. The touch interface hasn't yet been implemented and for now it's a barebones terminal view of Linux that is controlled by a keyboard connected via USB interface, but the video below nevertheless marks the beginnings of running a non-Apple OS on the iPhone.

OpeniBoot Linux     DevTeam’s very own planetbeing  announced yesterday that the Linux 2.6 kernel was successfully ported for Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch platforms. Introducing, iPhone Linux !! It’s the beginning of a real alternative operating system. Currently, it’s only a first rough draft and there are many drivers missing. But it’s a start… They do not have wireless networking, touchscreen, sound, accelerometer, or baseband support YET. More is coming as they develop and stabilize it. In simple terms, it’s like Microsoft DOS. It only has a command line user interface with very few features.    There is a demo video at ...

In another hardware conquest for the Linux platform, it has been successfully ported to the iPhone. While the current version is not much more than a working, beta version, it does prove that a Linux iPhone is a viable proposition.
As Gizmodo points out in the headline of their article, this may be the start of an Android iPhone. Oh, the irony is fantastic.

iPhone dev team member Planetbeing has successfully reverse engineered Apple’s hardware drivers and has managed to get the Linux kernel to boot on the 2G and 3G iPhone and the 1st gen iPod Touch. This first attempt is limited in functionality with support only for the Framebuffer driver, Serial driver, Serial over USB driver, and other items like Interrupts, MMU, clock, etc. The dev team is still working on things like enabling write support for the NAND, Wireless networking, Touchscreen support, Sound, Accelerometer and Baseband support. Despite these limitations, it is still exciting to see the iPhone boot an alternative OS and it is means ...

iPhone Running Android? Windows Mobile, Too?
Android Phone Fans —
Since Android is an Open Source operating system you could theoretically run it virtually on other handsets and platforms. Just as your Mac can run Windows virtually, the folks at iphone-dev.org have mashed up a solution for the iPhone to run Linux. Porting Android over would be the logical next step.
And so the quest for mobile nirvana continues. I’m curious how many iPhone owners would actually run Android on their device, seeing as how most are nearly religious in their claims that the iPhone trumps all others. So why would you want to run Android, anyway? The other interesting thing is ...

Linux on the iPhone
Wired: Gadget Lab —
From the department of "Because We Can" comes Linux on the iPhone. Don't get too excited -- you won't be running Ubuntu or Google's Android OS on your iPhone any time soon (even if you wanted to). Here it is in action:
Right now, as you can see, this is strictly a proof of concept -- there's no actual interaction with any of the iPhone's input methods. No touch screen, no nothing. Instead, the iPhone runs a USB client which lets you type in commands from another computer via the dock connector.
Still, it's a good start, and once somebody slaps a few ...

It was thought to be impossible, but using slick reverse engineering, the developers made Linux geeks the world over giddy with delight. Using a system boot software, OpeniBoot, and a Busybox toolkit, they were able to port the Linux kernel to a jailbroken iPhone. Openiboot allows the iPhone to be booted into more than one operating system. The developers managed to port the Linux Kernal to the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod touch. The port has limited ability at the moment, it can only be utilized when ...
