Research firm Canalys said Nokia’s share dropped from 51.4 percent in the last year’s third quarter to 38.9 percent this year, while Apple climbed to 17.3 percent and RIM captured 15.2 percent. ... call quality problems to be major issues for the iPhones that did fail. As was true with all three models in the study, the predominance of failure-related issues had to do with the touchscreen interface.
One area where iPhone does appear to lag its two main competitors is in failure due to accident: 12 percent of iPhone failures happen because the owner drops it, spills liquid on it, or otherwise stops treating it like the sensitive mobile computing device it is.

iPhone twice as reliable as the Blackberry? Dream on
The Open Road —
I love my iPhone and have never felt tempted to return to the Blackberry, but I was still rolling my eyes at TechCrunch 's report of the iPhone being "twice as reliable as the Blackberry" . After all, my iPhone crashed in four different applications in a 45-minute period this afternoon. Of course, the referenced SquareTrade study covers hardware malfunctions, not software malfunctions. In this, perhaps it is true that the malfunction rate for iPhones after one year is only 5.6 percent, while Blackberrys crap out 11.2 percent of the time. But in day-to-day usage, I've ...

They would also be used in different ways or not get the same "love". The failure rates could be biased based on the usage time per day as at places I have worked, I see people use their Blackberries much more than my co-workers would ever use their personal cellphones. iPhone trounces BlackBerry, Treo in reliability

... things, a 6% difference isn’t that much of gap between the two. I might be a bit biased, but I would hardly call my Bold unreliable. However, the survey does provide a lot of comparative perspective, and certainly justifies in one way why sales and customer satisfaction are higher among iPhone users; the smartphone feature sets may be comparable across the board, but how well those functions continue to work over the long haul could be the deciding differentiator.
