... an interview at the Web 2.0 Summit, AT&T; Mobility CEO Ralph De La Vega confirmed that AT&T; would be offering an official tethering option for the iPhone "soon".
Which pretty much confirms that Netshare was pulled from the App Store for offering functionality that the carriers want to charge for. Which, you know, is honestly fine... I just wish they could have introduced this sooner.
Only question now is, what does "soon" mean? 2.2?

We’re not sure just how “soon” AT&T will be offering their iPhone tethering plan, so it might be prudent to file this one under “rumor.” For what it’s worth, MacRumors is reporting that the next iPhone firmware revision, iPhone 2.2 OS, will include built-in support for iPhone tethering.

One thing is pretty certain, however: the unlimited data access that iPhone users currently enjoy on their handsets will not be carried over to tethered use. Although there’s no indication of what conditions will be placed upon the system, it’s likely that a fairly strict cap will be implemented to prevent the AT&T network getting bogged down.

Tethering is an option by which your iPhone will serve as a 3G Modem for your Laptops. With tethering you can connect to internet or share data.
Currently two tethered options exist for iPhone- Netshare and iModem. But Apple removed the Netshare option from Apple’s iPhone App Store while iModem works only in Jailbroken phones. Both these options violate AT&T Terms and Conditions.
